North Somerset families invited to have their say on childcare provision

North Somerset Council is inviting families to help shape the future of childcare and early years provision in a consultation that opened at noon today (Monday 4 December).

The council’s early years team would like to hear from parents and carers living in North Somerset as it gathers information on current childcare arrangements and demand for early years services across the area.

It is hoped that this information will help the team to understand where childcare or school wraparound provision is being used, and where there may be gaps or challenges. This information will be used to inform where available support and funding should be allocated in the future.

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Children’s Services, Families and Lifelong Learning, said: “As a council, we strongly believe in the importance of early years provision and effective early intervention.

“I know how vital early help is for children and families. It maximises their developmental potential, identifies challenges early on, supports families, and sets a strong foundation for future success. It’s a key part of our approach to getting things right early, and to make a positive impact on our children’s – and hence society’s – lifelong wellbeing.

“I urge families who use, or are planning to use, childcare or early years services to take part in the consultation. We’re genuinely interested in hearing about your experiences and any aspects you feel could be improved. We want to make sure that money is invested in the way that brings most benefit to local children.”

Section six of the Childcare Act 2006 places a duty on English local authorities to secure sufficient childcare for working parents and carers.
