Walking is a simple, free way to stay active, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Beyond the health benefits, walking is a fantastic way to explore local surroundings, whether it's nature, shops, or businesses.
It's also a great way to boost both physical and mental wellbeing, and North Somerset offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy it.
North Somerset Council has provided an online calendar of events, including organised group walks, walking sports, and themed walks. Find more information on the Better Health North Somerset website at Walking | Better Health North Somerset.
Anyone needing support to view the online calendar can visit their local library where staff can help. There is also an extensive list of walking routes up to six miles. Many routes are accessible for wheelchair users and those with limited mobility.
Cllr Jenna Ho Marris, Lead member for health at North Somerset Council said: “We’d like to encourage everyone to get walking this May, no matter whether you are a regular walker or if you would like to increase your physical activity. Walking is one of the easiest ways to become healthier and lose weight. It’s not only good for your physical wellbeing but also for mental health such as improving mood, reducing stress and anxiety, increasing energy levels and sleeping better. There are hundreds of benefits of walking, even ten minutes of brisk walking per day. We have many beautiful areas to explore across North Somerset and have staff available to help you make the most of North Somerset Walk Fest this May.”
North Somerset has numerous walking groups that always welcome new members. Join one of North Somerset’s Health Walk groups for short, sociable walks ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, led by trained leaders. These walks are perfect for those who are new to exercise or looking to become more active.
Download the list of walking groups from the website at Walking Groups | Better Health North Somerset, or consider starting your own local walking group with training and support.
Get involved with North Somerset Walk Fest in the workplace too, by setting up a walking challenge, walking to work (if possible) or have walking meetings.
