Grants for home energy measures

Low income households in North Somerset without gas central heating may be eligible for a new round of funding to install energy-saving, low carbon heating measures in their home.

North Somerset Council has partnered with Bath and North East Somerset Council and Bristol City Council on the second round of the Bright Green Homes project, after successfully bidding for government funding. The scheme is being administered by Bristol City Leap.

Applications are now open for households in North Somerset to get help to fund a wide range of low-carbon technologies and energy-saving measures, including insulation and solar panels. 

To qualify for the funding, applicants must live in North Somerset and:

  • be the owner, landlord or private rented tenant of the property
  • have a combined annual income of £31,000 or lower
  • do not have gas central heating.

Landlords of private rented properties can access funding to pay for up to two-thirds of the cost of the upgrades. There is no cost for homeowners and the grant can be used to fund all improvements.

Councillor Annemieke Waite, North Somerset Council’s executive member for climate, waste and sustainability, said: “We’re committed to tackling the climate emergency and creating a thriving and sustainable North Somerset. Improving the energy efficiency of homes across North Somerset is a vital step in our journey to becoming a carbon neutral area by 2030. 

Councillor Jenna Ho Marris, executive member for homes and health, said: “If you have no household heating, or heat your home with oil, wood, LPG or an electrical heating system, please get in touch. The Bright Green Homes scheme will deliver a huge range of measures to help your energy bills stay low all year round.”

Together with the other councils, North Somerset Council successfully bid for £11m government funding to help local households install technologies which reduce carbon emissions and lower energy costs. The criteria for eligibility were established by the government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
