The works to surface dress the road will take place from the border with Somerset in Bleadon to where the A370 joins Uphill Road North in Weston-super-Mare.
The scheme is part of the council's ongoing, low-cost annual maintenance programme. Surface dressing provides added protection to the carriageway surface as well as enhancing the skid resistance, making it safer to drive on. This added protection extends the life of the carriageway surface by up to 10 years.
The works will require four separate closures as the scheme will be carried out in phases. Phase one will take place on Friday 17 June and the road will be closed between 8pm and 6am to prepare for the surface dressing. Phase two will involve a daytime closure on Sunday 3 July between 6am and 2pmwhile the surface dressing is completed. Phase three requires a daytime closure to seal the carriageway and this will be completed on Sunday 10 July between 6am and 4pm. The final stage will be the installation of road markings which will be completed over five nights from Monday 18 July between 8pm and 6am.
Cllr Steve Hogg, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for highways said the scheme would cause some disruption but the work was essential to prolong the life of the busy road.
"Surface dressing is carried out at this time of year because bitumen and loose chippings bond to the road surface more effectively in warmer weather. We would urge drivers to be patient while we carry out this important maintenance."
Surface Dressing is largely weather dependent and the dates listed may change.
