North Somerset libraries will be joining in the celebrations again this World Book Day, offering the perfect place for everyone to find a book they love.

Children who have not received a £1 World Book Day token at school will be able to collect one from their local library.

Children aged up to four years old will be able to collect a free book at a North Somerset library when they borrow books on their library card. The council hopes that stock will be delivered to libraries during the week beginning Monday 6 March and will be available until Friday 31 March, or until stocks last.

Three North Somerset libraries are running special events based on Tom Percival’s new book Billy’s Bravery, one of this year’s £1 World Book Day books. These will take place between 10.30am and 11.30am in Clevedon on Monday 27 February; at the Campus in Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday 28 February; and in Portishead on Thursday 2 March. To book a place, contact one of the three libraries.

Libraries will also be celebrating World Book Day during their weekly Rhymetime and Storytime sessions for children under five and their parents or carers. Some of the sessions need to be booked in advance. Book your spot and find out about other library events taking place at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/libraryevents.

Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for the library service, said: “The shared mission of both World Book Day and North Somerset libraries is to promote reading for pleasure. This is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or income.

“The line-up of £1 books for 2023 has something for every child - whatever stage they are at beginning, early, or fluent, and independent readers. Please do visit your local library!"

Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for children's services and lifelong learning, said: "World Book Day is exciting and gives more children than ever the opportunity to discover a love for reading.

“Both World Book Day and North Somerset Libraries want to help encouraging a life-long love of reading, which will support children’s’ educational achievement across all subjects.”
