The Health Walks programme has been running for more than 15 years, offering people the chance to improve their health and wellbeing at a pace that suits them.
More than 300 walkers take part in the Health Walks every week, at locations across North Somerset including Clevedon, Nailsea, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare, Winscombe, Long Ashton and Yatton. For 2023 there will also be a new Weston-super-Mare Health Walk leaving from a different medical centre or doctors surgery each week, starting from Tuesday 10 January.
Each walk is led by a trained volunteer and is between 30 and 90 minutes. All abilities are welcome to attend, and the walking routes are chosen to be accessible and inclusive to as many people as possible.
Walking is a great, free way to improve your fitness and connect with other people as Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council and executive member for health, explains:
“Our Health Walks programme is all about people making small changes to improve their health and wellbeing. The walks offer people who are new to walking or who aren’t very active, the chance to experience the pleasures and health benefits of walking in a friendly, supportive group. It’s a great way to meet people, get some exercise and go to different places and see different places on your doorstep.
“Walking is a fantastic way to get more active and help both your physical and mental health. It’s something people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy, and of course it’s completely free – you don’t need a gym membership or any expensive equipment to take part.
“The fact our Health Walks programme has been running for so long is a testament to our wonderful volunteers and also how enjoyable walking is! So, if you’re looking to improve your health in 2023, walking is a great way to start!”
