Master composters are trained volunteers who educate people – friends, neighbours and the local community – about composting. Volunteers can choose how to share their composting knowledge, from attending events and giving advice to writing newsletters or using social media.

The next training workshop is happening at Yeo Valley Organic Garden on Tuesday 26 March from 10am to 4.30pm. The sessions are funded by North Somerset Council, and delivered by Garden Organic.
In the morning, members of the public can attend an in-depth workshop on how to compost at home. Prospective volunteers will stay on for lunch and an afternoon of master composter training. For anyone who is interested in composting, but isn’t sure if volunteering is for them, they can come along for the morning only (10am to 11.45am).
Councillor Annemieke Waite, North Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Climate, Waste and Sustainability, said: “The master composters scheme is a fantastic way for people to learn how to compost, and then use those skills to educate and inspire their local community.
“Rather than putting garden waste into green bins, we’d encourage everyone to compost if they can. Composting has big environmental benefits, as it saves greenhouse gas emissions – one year of composting can save the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that your kettle makes in a year. And at a time when we’re all feeling the squeeze, it can also save residents’ money, as they don’t need to buy compost.”
“By giving composting a go, we can all help protect our environment and work towards reaching our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Kate Eastment, project coordinator at Garden Organic, said: “North Somerset Master Composters is a fantastic project to get involved in if you’re interested in composting and sustainability, and enjoy communicating with others.
“There are lots of ways you can make a difference as a master composter, depending on your skills and interests. There are opportunities to get to know other volunteers, working alongside each other at events or delivering workshops and talks. Some volunteers use their knowledge to support their immediate community, and others write articles for press and social media.
“However you choose to get involved, you’ll receive excellent training from Garden Organic and have access to support and resources all year round from your local Project Coordinator. We’re a friendly team and always keen to welcome new volunteers aboard.”
