North Somerset remains in a Met Office AMBER weather warning until 9pm today (Saturday 7 December), which advises damage to buildings and homes is possible, trees may continue to come down and disruption to powerlines is possible.
Over 50 calls have been logged so far with North Somerset Council due to fallen trees or damage to buildings and it’s recommended residents continue to stay at home - but check their travel routes if they do need to travel.
Leader of North Somerset Council, Cllr Mike Bell said: “We’ve received over 50 calls due to fallen trees and damage to buildings and we still have an Amber warning in place which could see this number increase. Our teams are fully prepared and have been out responding to calls and ensuring roads are open as soon as possible. Each call will be prioritised so please bear with us as we respond.”
Also, a number of homes across North Somerset remain without power. National Grid are working hard to get power back and running, which is expected to resume this evening. As this is an ever-changing picture, it’s recommended to check: https://powercuts.nationalgrid.co.uk/power-cut-map/ for the latest information and updates.
Leader Cllr Bell continued: “The Council’s Rapid Response service that operates 24/7 is available for anybody that is alone and at risk during power outages. We’d like to encourage family and friends to check on elderly or more vulnerable neighbours but if needed, our emergency response service is available.”
In an emergency, please contact the Emergency Duty Team on 01454 615165.
National Grid will also prioritise vulnerable residents without power who joined their ‘Priority Services Register’. This provides extra help and additional support during a power cut for the elderly, very ill, disabled or those who rely on power for medical equipment. The council activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) yesterday which provides shelter to people sleeping rough. This is under continuous review until Friday. The council works in partnership with the YMCA outreach team and Somewhere to Go Day Centre. When activated, anyone who is sleeping rough is encouraged to have a bed for the night. Not everyone sleeping rough wants to accept the offer, and they will have reasons of their own for declining. If you are worried about anyone sleeping rough, please send an alert to the outreach team by using the Streetlink website at: https://thestreetlink.org.uk
Household Waste Recycling Centres remain closed today. Portishead and Weston Recycling Centres will reopen on Sunday 8 December but, due to fallen trees, Backwell will remain closed whilst the site is made safe.
