The scheme includes replacing the roof, improving the provision of toilet facilities for children, and improving the school staffroom.
Most of the construction is planned to take place during the 2023 school summer holiday to limit disruption to the school.
Kewstoke Primary School is one of three primary schools in North Somerset maintained by the local authority. The other 61 primary schools are in academies.
Councillor Catherine Gibbons, North Somerset Council's Deputy Leader and executive member responsible for children’s services, said: “I’m delighted that this scheme has been given the green light. It forms part of our wider strategy to ensure every child in North Somerset is able to learn in a high-quality environment which makes them feel valued. These improvements will make sure that the school’s facilities are giving children the best environment in which to learn and thrive.”
At the time of the planning application being submitted, Lucy Kirkman-Kovacs, Chair of Governors at Kewstoke Primary School, said: “The proposal to improve our school has generated an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation amongst the children, staff, and school community. The school holds a special place in the hearts of many within the village, who view the prospect of enhancing the children’s learning environment and providing such a positive change as a wonderful and eagerly awaited opportunity.”
