Recycling and waste collections suspended in North Somerset for HM Queen’s funeral

Revised arrangements will be put in place for household recycling and waste collections for the remainder of the week and residents are being encouraged to familiarise themselves with these.

Households due a black bin waste collection or a garden waste collection next week should place their containers out a day later than normal. Collections will be made from Tuesday to Saturday.

Recycling and food waste collections will take place on the normal collection days except for households due a collection on Monday 19 September who should place their containers out the following week on Monday 26 September.

Residents can check their revised recycling and waste collection dates (excluding garden waste) on the council’s website at: www.n-somerset.gov.uk/calendar.

North Somerset Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, Cllr Mike Solomon said: “Recycling and waste collections are, by their very nature, a noisy pastime, and Monday should be a day when all our communities have the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty in their own way without disturbance. Suspending collections for the day will also enable our crews to be with their families and watch the funeral.

“This approach is being taken by councils across the country and similar arrangements are expected in our neighbouring council areas. We have put in place arrangements for the remainder of the week that will cause the least inconvenience to the majority of our residents and I hope people will understand why we have taken this approach.”

Households which will miss their recycling and food waste collections on Monday can put out additional items for recycling the following week. These should be washed, squashed and sorted to help crews and speed up collection times. Extra items, except glass, can be put in loosely tied carrier bags with a different type of recycling in each bag.
