The Tropicana, a former lido located on Weston-super-Mare seafront, is no stranger to nationally recognised events, with Banksy’s Dismaland taking residence on the site in 2015 and last year, the SEE MONSTER – a North Sea platform renovated into a stunning weather focused installation.
North Somerset Council is inviting interested parties to submit expressions of interest to operate the space. Operators must demonstrate that proposals will add to the quality and diversity of the seafront offer, and that they have a successful track record relevant to their proposals.
The launch of the search for a new operator follows the council receiving a £20million grant from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, £8 million of which is earmarked for the Tropicana. The money will be used to restore and renovate the facility, making the outdoor space more useable and increasing the capacity of the venue for a range of uses.
Mark Canniford, Executive Member for Placemaking and Growth, said: “We are looking for organisations with the vision to make the Tropicana the world-class venue we know it can be. Dismaland and SEE MONSTER have shown us what can be done and with the benefit of the Levelling Up investment and the right operator, the future of the Tropicana is looking bright.
"Expressions of interest must offer high-quality, diverse, year-round entertainment to attract residents and visitors and complement the Super Weston Placemaking Strategy. We are keen to engage with potential partners with a realistic and sustainable plan for the venue.”
Expressions of interest will be accepted until 30th April 2023. For further information on this exciting opportunity, please contact us at superweston@n-somerset.gov.uk.
