Silica set for improvement

A project to change the use of the Silica at Big Lamp Corner in Weston-super-Mare begins today (Wednesday 23 April).

North Somerset Council and Weston-super-Mare Town Council are working together on plans to create a new information hub at the site on the corner of the High Street and Regent Street.

Work will include enclosing the existing disused bus shelter and installing information display screens to provide people with the latest information about what’s happening around the town, including events, community projects and local businesses. The structure will also be thoroughly cleaned.

Once complete, the aim is for Weston-super-Mare Town Council to lease the ground floor for its Visit Weston service. North Somerset Council would continue to operate and maintain the upper level and multi-coloured lighting installed in 2022.

Cllr Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council's executive member for placemaking and economy, said: “I’m delighted to see that by working in partnership with Weston-super-Mare Town Council, we’ve identified an effective and viable use for the Silica. I’m sure as a visitor information space, it will help to provide valuable community information to support residents and visitors alike. I know local businesses are really positive and supportive of these plans too, which is great.”

The £40,000 council-funded capital project will take around six weeks to complete. The first element of work will be carried out by local contactor John West.
