Third opportunity for businesses to access energy saving improvements

North Somerset Council is launching the third round of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Green Business Grants, previously known as the Net Zero Business Grants. The funding will support energy efficiency and emissions reduction for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and eligible sole traders.

Businesses can also apply for a free carbon survey to identify savings and efficiency improvements. Surveys are required for large grants but optional for small ones (see further below).

Future Leap is delivering these surveys on our behalf on a first-come, first-served basis; fill in an expression of interest form to begin the process.

Capital grant funding opportunities

The programme offers two types of financial support. Small capital grants, ranging from £500 to £4,999, are available to SMEs and sole traders without the need for a carbon survey. Applications open on 1 March 2025 and close on 31 May 2025. These grants can help fund projects such as insulation, LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances, and EV charging points.

Large capital grants, between £5,000 and £10,000, are available exclusively for SMEs and require a carbon survey. Applications open on 1 May 2025 and close on 30 June 2025. This funding supports major energy efficiency measures, including solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and other decarbonisation projects identified in the carbon survey.

To apply for a grant, businesses must submit an application form along with necessary documentation, such as quotes for proposed improvements, a roof structural survey (if needed), and landlord or planning permissions where applicable.

The council welcomes innovative ideas beyond listed measures. Businesses interested in discussing eligibility or specific projects can contact climate.emergency@n-somerset.gov.uk.

Cllr Annemieke Waite, Executive Member for Climate, Waste and Sustainability at North Somerset Council, said: "The Green Business Grants programme is a fantastic opportunity for local SMEs to invest in sustainable practices, reduce their energy costs, and contribute to our wider net-zero goals. We are proud to support businesses in North Somerset as they take meaningful steps towards a greener future."

Cllr Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Placemaking and Economy, said: "Helping small businesses transition to energy efficiency is crucial for both our local economy and the environment. These grants and carbon surveys provide valuable resources to help businesses lower their carbon footprint. I encourage all eligible businesses to take advantage of this cost-saving initiative."

Businesses will benefit from lower energy costs, improved efficiency, and enhanced environmental credentials, making them more attractive to eco-conscious customers. With financial support available, now is the time for businesses to invest in sustainable infrastructure and contribute to a greener North Somerset.
