A variety of tree called the Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as the ‘maidenhair tree’, was planted after careful selection for its shape and suitability to the coastal location.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Somerset, Mohammed Saddiq, said: “The coronation is, of course, an historic occasion and this is a wonderful way to commemorate it in Weston-super-Mare.
“Under Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Green Canopy project nearly 45,000 trees have been planted across Somerset which I think is a magnificent achievement.”
The planting of these 10 trees is the latest project to be delivered by the Weston Tree & Plant Group. Set-up in March 2022, the group aims to increase tree canopy levels and biodiversity across the town and sees North Somerset Council working in partnership with businesses, community groups and other organisations including Weston-super-Mare Town Council and Weston-super-Mare Civic Society.
Cllr John Crockford-Hawley, North Somerset Council’s Heritage Champion and a member of the Weston & Tree Plant Group, said: “Significant Royal events are frequently commemorated by planting trees. This avenue complements a similar line of trees, planted for Her Late Majesty’s Silver Jubilee along Queensway in Worle.”
