Part of an unregistered historic park and garden, and within the Great Weston Conservation Area, the Beach Lawns are a prominent large open space on the town’s seafront. The space has multiple uses including general recreation, an overflow car park and as a key event venue for the town.
An investment of £150,000 is being made for work to be carried out, which includes the installation of:
- 663 one-metre-high posts at one and a half metre intervals around all seven lawns, a total perimeter distance of 1,076 metres, and
- 11 gated vehicle access points to assist the control of vehicles.
Four new dropped kerbs have already been installed. The new features will not affect pedestrians, bicycles, mobility scooters or any other type of non-vehicular access.
The work, which has been scheduled to avoid planned events while keeping the site open to the public, is expected to complete by the end of September.
Councillor Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, said: “As well as being an important part of the town’s identity, the Beach Lawns serve to provide a valuable resource to both residents and visitors alike. I welcome this improvement work, which will serve to protect this much-loved space. I’m particularly delighted to learn that the posts and gates have been chosen specifically so that they are not obtrusive to the overall look of the landscape.”
Councillor Mike Bell, Deputy Leader of North Somerset Council and local ward member, added: “I’m pleased to see this work getting under way as it will have the added benefit of eliminating the risk of the area being used for unauthorised encampments. This investment at the Beach Lawns follows work we’ve already completed at Melrose car park, Clarence Park and Hutton Moor Leisure Centre and means all these sites are protected for use and enjoyment by our residents and visitors.”
