Modeshift STARS is a nationally recognised scheme that rewards schools who encourage sustainable, active, and safe travel.
After consulting with everyone, Worle Village Primary School has completed more than 15 initiatives that to help children travel actively and safely to school including Living Streets Walk to School Week, The Sustrans Big Walk & Wheel challenge, National Clean Air Day, Bikeability cycle confidence training, walking on school trips and most recently International Car Free Day.
Aligned with national trends, a recent survey at Worle Village Primary School showed that despite their ongoing work during the last 2 years the percentage of those travelling by car to school has increased.
The eco-group are already working with teachers on how to change this on a journey to do even more to improve their environment and get their Silver award.
Headteacher Kerry James said: “Here at Worle Village Primary School, we are proud to be receiving the Bronze award for supporting forms of active and sustainable travel. We have worked hard to create effective plans, increase the profile of sustainable travel and educate all stakeholders of the school in how they can contribute to protecting their environment.”
Cllr Roz Willis said “It was a delight to visit the school, and see such enthusiasm from both the teaching staff and young people. They have started their journey towards silver and I congratulate everyone on a well-deserved award.”
Cllr Steve Hogg, Executive Member for Transport and Highways at North Somerset Council said: “Well done to Worle Village School for completing more than 15 initiatives that help children travel actively and safely to school. It’s also great to hear they are already working towards a Silver award. North Somerset Council is keen to make active travel, such as walking, cycling and scooting, the natural choice for parents and children to get to school. This means North Somerset will be a cleaner, healthier and more active place. This year, five North Somerset schools have received an award for their school travel plan and many more have signed up to the scheme and are making good progress. Our active travel strategy sets out ambitious plans to increase walking and cycling trips by 300% by 2030. We’re really proud of all our schools who are helping to achieve this.”
