A38 Major Road Network

The A38 Major Road Network project will deliver improvements at nine locations along the A38. It will run between Barrow Street junction at Barrow Tanks and the Edithmead Roundabout (M5 J22).

Four of these locations are within Somerset County. Somerset County Council are currently holding engagement on the planned works in their area.

The proposed works will better connect local communities by improving options for getting around. This includes both active and sustainable travel. We will also address journey reliability times and road safety along the A38 corridor.

We outlined proposals for all nine locations in a public consultation in Summer 2021. Please see our map to show where the nine locations are indicated.

The Barrow Street junction works included in the Outline Business Case for the A38 MRN have since been delivered. These were provided via North Somerset’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Next steps

We secured Department for Transport funding to develop the full business case in Autumn 2023. Proposals for each of the nine locations are now being designed and developed. More details will be shared in another round of public consultation. This is expected to take place in 2025.

During 2025, we will appoint a contractor who will help deliver the works. Their first task will be completion of detailed design. This will allow us to submit a full business case to the Department for Transport.

The business case must be approved before any construction can begin.

We have secured Department for Transport funding to deliver improvements along the A38. We will work in partnership with Somerset Council to deliver these improvements.
