Advocacy means getting support from another person to help you express your views and wishes. They will help you to make sure your voice is heard. Someone who helps you in this way is called your advocate.
Someone you already know can can become your advocate in a range of situations. Your advocate could be:
- a family member
- a friend
- someone from your community
- a member of a faith group
In certain circumstances you will have the legal right to an independent advocate. An independent advocate can make sure that:
- you are in control of decisions which are made about you
- your wishes and feelings are heard and considered
- you can contribute to improving the health and care services you use
