Becoming a childminder

What is a childminder

You must register as a childminder with Ofsted or a childminder agency if you:

  • look after one or more children under the age of eight
  • do this for more than a total of two hours a day
  • are looking after these children in a domestic setting (normally your own home)
  • are paid or rewarded for this work

Childminders can now choose to register to work solely from a non-domestic premises instead of working from their home. This category of childcare is known as ‘Childminders without domestic premises’.

Childminders:

  • must be 18 years or older
  • are usually self-employed
  • can work with other childminders and assistants

Childminders who want to work from their home with four or more other adults need to register as ‘Childcare on domestic premises’.

How to apply

To apply to register with a childminder agency, you need to follow instructions on the individual agency website. You can find a list of these on the gov.uk website.

If you decide to sign up with an agency, please read the terms and conditions in your contract carefully so you are aware of all the charges that apply.

Any agreement with your agency is your responsibility and is separate from the Provider Agreement with North Somerset Council.
