Damp and mould

In November 2022 the Secretary of State contacted all councils regarding damp and mould in the private rented sector.

We were asked to provide an estimate about the levels of damp and mould in North Somerset along with data on action taken. The government have now published this data on their website.

This is our plan to reduce damp and mould in North Somerset:

• to inspect all private rented properties where there are concerns over damp and mould and children are living in the property
• to consider taking formal enforcement action again Band E hazards for damp and mould under the Housing Act 2004
• ensure all staff regulating conditions in the private rented sector are certified under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System
• inspections carried out where customers approach our housing solutions teams and raise concerns over damp and mould
• provide free hygrometers on inspections carried out by the private rented housing team
• provide information and advice at local information events to highlight the risks of damp and mould in the home
• continue to review advice and guidance for tenants and landlords
• work with charitable and voluntary sector to highlight support available for tenants
• engage with health colleagues on an awareness campaign with the aim of accelerating intervention when required
• provide advice on grant programmes for poorly insulated homes
• liaise with local social housing providers on actions they are taking to address damp and mould complaints
