Our roles

Adult Social Care Workers (ASCWs)

This is a great opportunity if you want to work in Adult Social Care but don't have a degree in Social Work.

Our Adult Social Care Workers come from a diverse range of professional backgrounds. They work alongside people and their carers who draw on support to help them achieve the goals that matter to them.

Adult Social Care Workers receive supervision and support from registered social workers. They also have the opportunity to apply to become a Social Work Apprentice.

Social Work Apprentices

As an Adult Social Care Worker with us, you can have the opportunity to become a registered Social Worker.

In partnership with the University of Gloucestershire, we offer a fully funded three year degree apprenticeship programme. You can complete this while you work for us.

We currently offer two ASCWs every two years but we are working to expand this offer.

Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSWs)

We provide an excellent level of support to newly qualified social workers. We prioritise reduced caseloads and protected-time and enhanced supervision. This is to ensure NQSWs have a safe pace to solidify the learning from their degree programme and critically reflect on their practice.

As part of an Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE), all NQSWs will attend group mentoring sessions. These are run by the Professional Development Leads for Social Work.

Social Workers

Our social workers practise in a wide variety of settings and within diverse communities. You will have the opportunity to work with members of the community who are or may have the following:

  • learning disabilities
  • older people
  • disabled people
  • people with experiences of mental ill-health
  • people at risk of abuse and neglect

We work in specialist teams in these areas so you can make a real difference to people's lives. How we approach this work is outlined in our Practice Framework.

We provide a range of post qualifying career development pathways to help our social workers take the next step in their careers. For example, you may wish to move on to become a

  • Practice Educator
  • Best Interest Assessor
  • Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP).

Further career pathways

Approved Mental Health Professionals (AMHPs)

Our AMHPs are highly knowledgeable and experienced staff. They have undertaken specialist training relating to the Mental Health Act 1983.

Practising at an advanced level, they hold complex caseloads and advise others in the application of the Mental Health Act.

AMHPs are responsible for

  • coordinating and leading Mental Health Act assessments
  • acting as an important safeguard for people who are at risk of detention under the Mental Health Act
  • ensuring that people’s human rights are respected in this process
  • making sure the social determinants of mental ill-health are always considered.

Senior Social Workers

Our Senior Social Workers are highly experienced professionals practising at an advanced level. They have undertaken specialist career development pathways. They are trained supervise other social workers.

They may carry complex caseloads. They main role is to support the rest of the team by providing supervision and team development activities.

Our Senior Social Workers will have the opportunity to undertake specialist training. This is to help them to practice in line with the Post-qualifying Standards for Social Work Practice Supervisors in Adult Social Care

Social Care Management (Team Manager, Heads of Service, Principal Social Worker)

Our multi-disciplinary teams are managed by people who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. They will be either a

  • Social Worker or;
  • Occupational Therapy (OT) professional

The teams are then grouped into service areas. These are led by Heads of Service who are also registered social workers or OTs. Management requires a deep and broad level of knowledge and expertise across both professions and the adult social care system.

We're committed to the principles outlined in the Local Government Association Employer Standards for Social Workers. We've ranked number one in the South West in terms of our staff’s perception of how well we adhere to these standards.

We develop our Social Work workforce through regular supervision, training and CPD activities.

Professional development

To empower social workers in their roles, we continuously improve our learning and development offer. This is to ensure social workers have access to a wide variety of continuing professional development opportunities.

We offer:

  • secured organisational membership with Research in Practice
  • collaboration with a range of higher education institutions to provide career development opportunities
  • an annual adult social work conference to celebrate the social work profession and highlighting examples of innovation and good practice at a local and national level.
