The responsibility for managing asbestos rests with anyone who:
- owns the building that contains it
- is responsible for the building through a contract or tenancy agreement
- controls the building even if there is no formal contract
- is responsible for maintenance or repairs in a multi-occupied building
If asbestos is found in a building the responsible person should:
- carry out a risk assessment
- prepare and implement a plan to survey, monitor, maintain or remove the materials
- provide information for anyone carrying out work on the building
- review and revise the plan regularly
The Health and Safety Executive provides advice on asbestos surveys and free online training.
