Mental health services

Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year – that’s around 36,000 people in North Somerset alone. These problems range from common conditions such as depression and anxiety to rarer problems like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Our mental health services are provided in partnership with Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Trust. Most people are referred to the services by their doctor.

The NHS also publishes advice if you are worried about your, or someone else’s, mental health.

The Samaritans

The Samaritans are a national charity offering support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also contact them if you’re worried about someone you know. They have a Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset branch.

Pete's Dragons

Pete's Dragons is an award winning charity which specialises in postvention or suicide bereavement.

They run a monthly peer support group in Weston-super-Mare, on the first Tuesday of every month.

NHS Talking Therapies

Known as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), this service is designed to support you by giving you the tools you need to get things back on track. Talking Therapies is available whether you’re depressed, stressed, anxious or dealing with any one of a wide range of common psychological and emotional issues. 

In North Somerset, Vita Health run the service on behalf of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (BNSSGICB).

Mind

Mind have a number of local services, including their Mindline listening service which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Their Mindline Trans+ helpline provides confidential, emotional and mental health support and signposting for people who identify as trans, a gender, gender fluid and non-binary, as well as their family and friends.

Talk Club

Talk Club is a UK male mental health charity helping men to improve their mental health. It's available to men aged 18 years old and over, offering talking groups, sports groups and therapy to help keep you mentally fit. Find out how to get involved on their website.

Social prescribing

Non-clinical mental wellbeing support is available through the social prescribing scheme, which aims to help people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing by connecting them with local services and activities. Ask your GP about their link worker or social prescriber. 

We Are Aware

We Are Aware CIC are North Somerset based. They raise awareness about mental health, suicide prevention. They also run Peer Support, Walk and Talk groups and other activities to support mental health. You can find out more on their website and follow them on social media.
