The Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Health and Social Care Ambassador Programme aims to help connect staff with schools. The ambassadors give a wide range of talks about careers across health and care.
Health and social care ambassador programme
If you already work in health and social care
Could you help motivate next generation of health and social care workers in the area? Local organisations have launched the Health and Social Care Ambassador programme.
This offers people in health and social care the opportunity to speak in schools and colleges about their roles. By sharing their career journeys, they can inspire the next generation of health and social care professionals.
The programme aspires to:
- ensure the future of the healthcare workforce by getting young people interested in health and social care professions
- support young people to make informed choices and consider the full range of roles and professions within health and social care
- help to dispel myths and ensure young people have a realistic view of the world of work and the routes into it
- develop the talent pool and ensure a skilled workforce in the future
Location and time commitment
Being a Health and Social Care Ambassador is free, easy, effective and fun.
Ambassadors and education providers are connected securely online. Volunteering takes place online or near were you live or work. Ambassadors can specify the geographic locations that suits them.
DBS checks are not needed for career insights talks and educational activities, as a teacher is always present.
By providing just three hours of your time per year, you could inspire a young person to take their first steps in a career like yours.

What happens next
Once you sign up, you will be invited to a training session and provided with access to a quarterly support group.
When you feel comfortable, you will be invited by a school or college to take part in careers fairs, career networking or lunchtime talks to young people.
Schools and colleges will send secure messages directly to ambassadors to see if they can attend. Typically, ambassadors will visit a school or college once a year to speak with young people.
If you are a school or educational setting
If you are in a school or educational setting, and you would like one of our ambassadors to come and give a talk, please get in touch.
Our programme has a range of professionals able to come to schools to talk about a career in health and social care. This includes both clinical and non-clinical roles in the community, hospital or care homes.
Our staff will help to illustrate the connection between what students are studying in the classroom and the potential job opportunities available. It is also an opportunity to highlight the role science, technology, engineering and maths subjects have for some professional careers in the NHS.
At the sessions, staff will talk about about the disciplines that they work in and what choices and qualifications led them to that career path. They will also share stories about what they enjoy about their role and memories of their careers so far.
