About the community anchor organisation role

The SPHL project aims to tackle the root causes of food insecurity. To achieve this, we want to engage with local organisations who have experience working with residents on this topic. We believe your skills and knowledge can help in a lead co-ordination role.

The community lead should:

  • already be working within Weston Central and South Ward
  • have a good understanding of the local community and its residents
  • have inclusive and trusted relationships

Role responsibilities

The role will include the following:

  • champion the voice of residents and support them to be actively involved with the project
  • engage, or continue to engage, local groups (including equalities groups) and residents in conversations about food security and its root causes, especially those with lived experience
  • with the SPHL project worker, set up and coordinate a local project team of relevant partners/residents that will meet regularly, or link in with existing project teams/networks
  • work with your project team to co-produce an area action plan for improving food security that builds on current work and is based on local need
    • please note that this plan will be focused around longer-term, sustainable changes that will make access to good, affordable food easier for residents. The plan will not focus on short-term crisis food response.
  • engage with a range of organisations and local businesses that can have an impact of food security
  • explore approaches as a team to address your action plan and develop a robust system for the use of project funding
  • together with the project workers, support and monitor funded initiatives in your area and highlight any arising issues
  • take up opportunities for learning through the wider SPHL national programme and use support available such as workshops, meetings and webinars as relevant
  • participate in peer learning/networking across Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) projects
  • contribute to and take part in evaluation activities to support the national programme
  • regularly report back on your action plan to local government to support quarterly reporting

Support and funding

You will receive the following support and funding:

  • £9000 funding to cover time spent on the project from July 2023 – October 2024.
  • Ongoing support from the SPHL project workers, including at project team meetings
  • Support from the Policy and Partnership team at North Somerset Council, as appropriate
  • Support to develop your local action plan and explore sustainable approaches
  • An opportunity to decide on the use of the £20,000 funding (alongside the project group)
  • Support to monitor and evaluate impact
  • Networking and learning opportunities with other target areas across BNSSG

Organisations are invited to partner with other organisations in their area who can also support this role. You can submit a joint Expression of Interest (EOI).

We especially encourage partnerships which help reach more people either by location or by including equalities groups.

Organisations taking on this community lead role will also be eligible to apply for start up funding. The project has been designed to address any potential conflicts of interest.
