Weston-super-Mare Resident Parking Scheme pilot

We are planning to pilot a new residents’ parking scheme in Weston-super-Mare.

In the scheme, we will trial putting parking controls on certain streets. This is to give priority to permit holders during certain hours of operation.

Our goal is to help residents, commuters and other vehicles share available parking spaces fairly. This will also make roads safer and improve the air quality.

We intend to launch the scheme early in 2025. Information about how to apply for a permit will be available at that time. We will contact you again before the scheme goes live.

We will review the scheme after 12 months of operation.

Launch and TRO notices

We plan for the scheme to come into effect in April 2025. This is subject to a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO).

A TRO is required to formalise changes to local highways, including parking measures. In the coming weeks, you will see TRO notices on lampposts on streets included in the scheme. There will also be advertisements in the local press. We also publish these notices on our dedicated TRO webpage.

Once advertised, it is possible to comment on the details of a TRO. The TRO adverts will include information on how you can do this.

Resident-only parking bays and parking permits

The scheme will introduce resident-only parking bays to several streets in Weston-super-Mare. Residents will be able to purchase a parking permit. This will allow allow you to use available resident-only bays without time limit.

The resident-only bays would be in operation from

  • 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday including bank holidays (except Christmas Day and Boxing Day).

Vehicles without a permit can use the spaces outside of these hours.

Permit options and cost

Resident parking permits would be priced at £60 per year and will be limited to one permit per household.

Residents may also purchase a permit which allows them to either park on-street or in Locking Road car park. This will be priced at £150 per year. Limit one permit per household (a household defined as a single address).

Residents may also purchase a permit which allows them to park in Locking Road car park. This will be priced at £90 per year. Residents may purchase an unlimited number of these permits (with a household defined as a single address).

North Somerset Council reserves the right to cap the number of permits if there is evidence that the available on-street parking is over-subscribed.

If this is necessary, a waiting list will be operated. Resident permits will be offered to households in chronological order from the date of the application being received.

Addresses where residents are not part of a single household shall be entitled to one allocation per household.

Where to purchase permits

All permits will be available to purchase on the North Somerset Council website.

Permits will be electronic and will be added to our databases. Your vehicle will then be exempt from enforcement.

Permits for visitors, carers, and businesses

Resident permit holders can add visitor permits to their account.

  • 250 visitor hours will be available for £25.
  • permit holders can purchase a maximum 500 hours a year
  • Once purchased, they will be valid for three years from the date of purchase
  • an additional 250 visitor hours will be applied to permits held by residents requiring visits from a carer
