Birnbeck Pier and Island are unsafe and in danger of collapse. This includes the buildings and structures on the landside and on the island.
Do not attempt to cross from the mainland to the island at low tide. There is no access to Birnbeck Island and this stretch of coastline has fast moving tides.
We have become aware of people ‘tombstoning’ from Knightstone Island. This is when you jump from a high spot into the water.
One of the biggest risks with tombstoning is not knowing what’s hidden beneath the water, and potentially hitting the rocks.
The depth of the water at Knightstone Island dramatically changes with the tides. Even for experienced swimmers, it can be very difficult to tell how deep the water really is.
Watch our video to learn more about the dangers of tombstoning from Knightstone Island.
Just one jump risks death or life-changing injuries. It’s never worth the risk.
Personal powered watercraft may only be launched from the slipway at Knightstone Island. You will need a permit to do this.
For more information, see the licences and permits section of our website.
