Guidance around critical incidents, loss and bereavement

Educational Psychology Service update

We're pleased to announce significant improvements to our critical incident support for schools.

Our new approach

The Educational Psychology Service (EPS) has updated its guidance on handling critical incidents, aligning with the UK Trauma Council's framework. The focus is on creating a safe, calm and supportive environment for all affected individuals.

New resources

To help schools better understand and apply the new guidance, we've developed a video explainer. This resource complements our updated written materials.

We also have a video explainer which can be used to support bereavement and loss. Guidance for this is based on materials from Child Bereavement UK.

Support levels

The two levels of support are:

1. Bereavement and loss (level 1):

  • for deaths occurring outside school with less severe impact
  • telephone consultations available for headteachers

2. Critical incident (level 2):

  • for sudden, traumatic events significantly impacting the school community
  • immediate telephone support, including out-of-hours service
  • possible same-day visits from educational psychologists

Accessing support

If your setting requires assistance during a critical incident, please don't hesitate to contact the EPS. Our contact details can be found in the appendices of the new guidance.

Remember, your setting’s wellbeing is our priority. We're here to support you through challenging times.
